The Experience

Ski Touring The Lyngen Fjords, Aboard A Sailing Yacht

A sailing expedition through the Lyngen Alps, where the boat doubles as basecamp, restaurant and transport all at once. Each day the skipper anchors in a new fjord and we go straight from deck to skin track, climbing peaks that rise directly from the sea and skiing back down to the water's edge. It's a rare way to experience Arctic Norway — arriving at the mountain by boat, with the ocean as the finish line of every descent. The exact route depends on snow and weather, but the feeling stays the same: total remoteness, big terrain, and a boat to come home to every evening.

Day By Day

The Route

This is one of several possible routes through the Lyngen fjords — the order of peaks, and even the anchorages themselves, depend on snow and weather each day. The skipper and guide decide together, day by day.

Day 1Embarkation & Setting Sail

We meet in Tromsø and board the yacht. After a safety briefing and a first look at the week's forecast, we set sail toward our first anchorage in the Lyngen fjords.

Day 2Akkarvik — Trolltinden (850m)

Our first ski tour, climbing Trolltinden above Akkarvik. In the evening, a stop at the little Lillebrygga pub ashore.

Day 3Uløya — Uløytinden (1,104m)

A full day on Uløya, with the option of a complete traverse of Uløytinden depending on conditions. Ashore, there's a sauna, a jacuzzi and a small local museum to explore.

Day 4Djupvik — Storhaugen (1,142m)

We anchor at Djupvik and climb Storhaugen, one of the highest points on the route, with sweeping views over the surrounding fjords.

Day 5Koppangen — Tafeltinden (1,381m)

The route's high point, literally and figuratively: Tafeltinden at 1,381m, followed by a night anchored off a remote island, a sauna, and a visit to a small whisky distillery.

Day 6Lyngen — Rørnestinden (1,031m)

One more big ski day on Rørnestinden, with a relaxed evening at a local pub in Lyngen.

Day 7Ringvassøya — Nordfjellet (1,000m)

Our last day on skis, climbing Nordfjellet on Ringvassøya before sailing back toward Tromsø.

Day 8Disembarkation

Breakfast aboard and disembarkation in Tromsø.

Accommodation

The Ship

We sail aboard a Bavaria Cruiser 51, a 15-metre (51 ft) offshore sailing yacht built for exactly this kind of expedition — an A-Ocean rated hull with a spacious teak cockpit, a bright saloon and multiple private cabins with their own heads. The yacht can sleep considerably more, but we cap the trip at 6 guests plus skipper and guide, so there's real space to spread out: room to store gear, a proper table for the meals the skipper cooks each evening, and enough privacy that a week aboard never feels tight. Operated by Boreal Yachting, who know these fjords as well as anyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Want To Know It All Before You Come?

Do I need sailing experience?

No. The skipper handles all navigation and anchoring — you're there to ski. All you need is to be comfortable spending a week living aboard a boat.

What ski level do I need?

Intermediate to advanced: solid off-piste control and enough fitness to climb 800–1,200 vertical metres on skins, several days in a row.

What happens if the weather turns?

The route is flexible by design. Each morning the skipper and guide check the forecast together and choose the best fjord and peak for that day — the order above is a guide, not a fixed plan.

What's it like sleeping aboard?

You'll have a private cabin with its own head. It's cosy rather than huge, but comfortable — and after a full day of ski touring, most people are asleep before they notice.

What should I bring?

Full ski touring gear (skins, boots, poles) and avalanche safety equipment (transceiver, shovel, probe), plus warm, waterproof layers for both the mountain and the boat deck.
