This itinerary is a guide only — the exact order of days may shift depending on the weather.
Transfer from Kutaisi to Mestia. On arrival, Enric from Aura Snow Trips will be waiting for you at Kutaisi airport to travel together to the hotel in Mestia. Once there, we'll go over the weather forecast and the plan for the week.
We ease in gently, skiing at one of the resorts around Mestia to get a first feel for the area and the incredible snow you find here. A guide who knows the terrain inside out will be with you: these are lightly marked resorts where you can reach wild terrain right from the lifts, no skinning required.
Our guide takes us to one of the best spots in the area for ski touring, skiing incredible untouched lines with Caucasus scenery that takes your breath away.
We spend the day on a descent into one of the nearby valleys, taking a taxi back up once we're down. These are long, beautiful descents that reach remote villages like Adishi, which can practically only be reached on skis.
In the morning we head to the capital of ski touring, in the Ushguli area: a medieval village at around 2,000 metres from where we set out on the day's routes. It's a place with endless skiing possibilities — hundreds of descents for every level — always surrounded by incredible scenery.
A flexible day set aside for the Heli Drop or catskiing (optional, at extra cost). Choose the Heli Drop and the helicopter drops you at almost 4,000 metres for a descent of around 2,000 vertical metres, with spectacular views over the Caucasus glaciers.
Our last day, decided on the spot based on the group's energy: back to the resorts, or one more day of ski touring for anyone with legs left! It could also become a second Heli Drop or catskiing day if the group prefers.
The base plan doesn't include catskiing or the heli drop — everyone is free to choose which activity to do, and on whichever day suits them best.
Depending on group size
We stay at Hotel Ushba in Mestia, a family-run hotel that blends traditional Svan design with modern comforts. The rooms — doubles, twins, junior suites and suites, many with a balcony — look out over the mountains surrounding the village. The hotel has its own restaurant serving Svanetian cuisine made with local produce, a hot tub, free Wi-Fi and 24-hour reception. It's close to hiking trails, the ski resorts and the historic Svan towers, and makes a good starting point for reaching the Chalaadi Glacier or the Koruldi Lakes on rest days.
A basic understanding of avalanche rescue gear, some ski touring experience, and solid skiing technique. And above all, plenty of enthusiasm!
Skiing always depends on the weather. Since lift passes are very affordable, we buy them day by day, only on the days we're actually skiing at a resort.
You should be fit enough to climb 800–1,200 vertical metres on at least two days of the trip. The pace is moderate and we never leave anyone behind.
We ask for an advanced level: you don't need to ski fast, but you do need solid control of your skis off-piste.
You can always rent gear, but you'll need ski touring equipment (poles, skis, skins and boots), clothing suited to a fairly cold climate, and avalanche safety gear (transceiver, shovel and probe).
